Introduction.

There are appeared difficalties with so many people while working in Russian in the Internet. This given list is destined for the swift plant of Internet (& not only these ones) but in order to have an opportunity to work with Russian letters in all the mode (reading of E-mail, WWW-pages & news, writing letters in Russian). Mean here is a description regarding to Russian letters proper work.

Now I've described Netscape Navigator 3.0 for Windows as the most convenient & often using program (for regards my mind).

If you have not this program (Netscape Navigator 3.0) you may download it here.

In the nearest future I plan to add the description of installation the other programs as well.

The Installation of Russian fonts.

For reading easier in Russian WWW -pages, one should set in Russian fonts in Windows. It demands for work convenience, the necessity of installation at least of one font for coding KOI8-R & the other for CP1251.

Russian fonts may be loaded (66 Kb) by clicking mouse here and then after keeping this file, run it (the file is selfopening). If while clicking the mouse on the emphasized text, instead of proposal to record the file there are file contents shown while clicking the mouse on the emphasized text, so, please, repeat keeping "Shift" key pressed.

After start, there will be derived Russian fonts off this file, which are necessary to set in Windows.

The installation of fonts is described in details in Windows manual & I shan't tell anything about it now (I'll add this further on apparently)

Let's turn to the particular setup of Netscape. (Menu & submenu will be shown through the arrows). (For example, to select "Options", then "General Preferences...", after this "Fonts" will be shown in the following way : "Options" -> "General Preferences..." -> "Fonts".)

And thus, let's begin :

"Options" -> "General Preferences..." -> "Fonts" -> "For the Encoding" -> "Cyrillic(KOI8-R)", to set in both Choose Font ("Use the Proportional Font" and "Use the Fixed Font") any russian KOI8-R font. (for example, ROL-KOI8/Courier). Then press "Ok".

Repeat the same for the font CP1251 :

"Options" -> "General Preferences..." -> "Fonts" -> "For the Encoding" -> "Cyrillic", to set in both Choose Font ("Use the Proportional Font" and "Use the Fixed Font") any russian CP1251 font. (for example, "ER Kurier 1251"). Then press "Ok".

The fonts size set in accoding to everyone's.

Then : "Options" -> "Mail and News Preferences..." -> "Composition" -> "Send and Post" -> "Allow 8 bit" -> "Ok".

Now under the necessity of switching over the print while reading WWW-pages it'll be enough "Options" -> "Document Encoding" & to select the necessary font.

You may check up of font installation having looked through the same text in KOI8-R or the same text in CP1251.

Automatically, while starting Netscape Navigator it's set in a default font for "Document Encoding" -> "Latin1". If you like not to set in "Cyrillic(KOI8-R)" font everytime while start program it's necessary to write down the following line in file netscape.ini in section [INTL] :

URL Charset=KOI8-R

How to read E-mail, news & WWW-pages in Russian.

Having set in the fonts correctly in Navigator (look at The Installation of Russian fonts) you'll read easily E-mail in Russian switching over the font only if it's necessary.

"Options" -> "Document Encoding" & select the necessary font.

Note : E-mail uses code KOI8-R around ex-USSR.

How to write E-mail letters in Russian.

In order to write down E-mail letters in Russian you ought to set in fonts correctly (look at The Installation of Russian fonts) & to use keyboard's driver for corresponding coding.

Usually multylanguages driver is including into the Windows'95.

There may be used one of the Russification programs in Windows 3.1 (for example, CyrWin). You may write down letters using CP1251 in CyrWin.

To use KOI8-R you may add mine driver for the keyboard for KOI8-R. (1 Kb) If while clicking the mouse on the emphasized text, instead of proposal to record the file there are file contents shown while clicking the mouse on the emphasized text, so, please, repeat keeping "Shift" key pressed. It's necessary to turn on this to CyrWin program on the following way :

After installation the program : "CyrWin Options" -> "Edit" -> "Language..." -> "Language" : "German" , "Keyboard Layout" : koi8r.kbd, "Font Group" : Default Windows Fonts, "ANSI-OEM" : Cyrillic, "Language Driver": Cyrillic, "Font Map": Cyrillic Sample. Then made confirmation "Ok" twice.

Selecting the "Cyrillic" coding you will be working both with Russian & English letters in CP1251, and choosing "German" you will be working with Russian & English letters in as well in KOI8-R.

The work will be present on one & the same keyboard at this time.

Wish you huge luck always & everywhere !
